OUR HISTORY

How It All Began.....

Since the fountain first rose over our newly developed community  in 1971, Fountain Hills' residents have stepped up to volunteer their time and talent, enhancing the quality of life for all calling this former cattle ranch home. This strong spirit of volunteerism continued with the town’s incorporation in 1989, notably by two residents whose visions and efforts led to our organization, which still serves our senior residents today.

Marti Lemieux, after serving as a member of the interim Town Council, responded to a community need for citizens needing temporary assistance with meals.  Her persistent efforts to work with various agencies, as well as various challenges, resulted in the creation of Home Delivered Meals, an ongoing program currently operating as Meals on Wheels.

John O'Flynn, a successful retired CEO, was another community visionary who stepped forward. He had the dream that Fountain Hills should have its own standalone Senior Center to serve our seniors.  After its modest beginning in the Kiwanis Building, John and a handful of like-minded believers organized as Senior Services Inc. and joined the meal delivery efforts, further advancing the mission to serve seniors.

A significant opportunity arose in 2002 when the Maricopa County Library moved out of Town Hall Building C (currently the Medical Complex on Palisades) to the newly constructed voter approved facility on La Montana.  An actual Senior Service Activity Center was able to move into the remodeled space at Town Hall, expanding their programming opportunities, celebrated with a ribbon cutting attended by local dignitaries, Chamber members, and enthusiastic volunteers.

As activities, services and participation grew so did the efforts to raise funds for a permanent senior service facility. In 2004, as plans were being made to construct a new town hall, vacating the three buildings on Palisades (including the Senior Center), the Senior Service Foundation was formed to invest all the funds that had been raised over the years to support the goals of Senior Services, Inc.

The Town made modifications at the new Community Center to accommodate the Senior Service activities and funds raised for a senior center building were redirected to support existing and new programs and activities. These efforts continue today through Senior Services Inc., recently rebranded as “Encore for More”, to demonstrate our organization’s ongoing commitment to fulfill it’s mission to enhance the lives of our  seniors. Encore recently established an affiliation with the well-established Fountain Hills Cultural and Civic Association (FHCCA) to assist in expanding our mission.  After a 30-year history of serving and enhancing the lives of seniors in Fountain Hills, this new alliance will strengthen the future of our organization that has become an integral part of this community.

Click on the link below for a more detailed review of the events and people “behind the scenes” who helped us to evolve into the Encore for More we are today, narrated by former President Lynn Strang for the 30th Anniversary Celebration, which took place on February 13, 2020.

Consider joining us to serve, or enjoy all that Encore has to offer.  For more information, please visit our website at www.encoreformore.org.  Your participation will be a rewarding experience that will continue the 50-year spirit of volunteerism in Fountain Hills and perpetuate our Town slogan as being “All that is Arizona”!

important to take so seriously, so she and hubby Terry headed to Mexico

with only their backpacks, spending time exploring beautiful colonial cities.

A year later they returned to their Sedona home, but soon wanderlust took

them to Yellowstone NP, where they lived and worked for two years,

soaking up the wild spaces.

Next adventure… gypsies, traveling as full-time RVers across the US for 6+

years, hiking through as many national parks as possible. LuAnn wrote a

travel blog of their adventures, complete with her photography, another love

of hers.

They moved to Fountain Hills five years ago and LuAnn came out of

retirement to work in the senior living industry.

Once again retired, LuAnn is excited to be a part of the Encore family and

also have time for more international travel, a passion of theirs.

Sandy discovered Fountain Hills in 2001, when her husband’s job brought them to the southwest.  And like everyone else who lives here, fell in love.  The mountains, the sky, the desert, the beautiful little town – what’s not to love.  Unfortunately, that same husband was transferred again in 2005, and she sadly followed him back to the midwest.  But she knew they would someday return.  And so, upon retirement, they came back, never to leave again.

Over the years, Sandy has held an array of positions, her favorite, and most rewarding, being development director for a women’s shelter.  With a background in merchandising and catering, fundraising was a perfect fit.

At this point in her life, Sandy enjoys volunteering with groups where she can use her specialties.  An avid cook and baker, she and that husband mentioned earlier, enjoy hosting dinners and events for friends.  She always wanted to grow up to be a hostess, like those beautifully clad ladies in the 1930s movies, and now she is (sans the evening gowns, of course).

When Marta's husband retired, they decided to move to Fountain Hills, which was 28 years ago. She graduated from Rutgers University with a BA in Psychology. Marta held many jobs, including retail store department manager, realtor, substitute teacher and finally as her husband’s office manager. The first few years they explored the west, all the way up the coast to Canada. Afterwards, Marta took a job with a Fountain Hills' church as their administrator. The job lasted much longer than she thought it would, 20 years, and she loved it. Marta was also the emcee at Fountain Hills Oktoberfest for many years. Retirement found her but still she looked around for something to keep her out of trouble. Being a Bingo caller seemed very interesting to Marta and has it ever been! She is also involved with the Encore Field Trips and Speaker Programs. She feels that Encore for More has something for everyone!
