Last year the Town of Fountain Hills and Dementia Friendly Fountain Hills hosted the first annual Dementia Caregiver Summit in our community. It was so beneficial by providing stress reducers and vital assistance to caregivers of those with cognitive impairment that organizers hope to make it an annual event.
Please refer to the flyer for additional information or click on https://www.fhtimes.com/
Part of the summit includes the opportunity to participate in one of the Virtual Dementia Tours that will be offered on Friday, February 7th. This is a unique experience that allows participants to actually experience the physical and mental challenges of those suffering from dementia. Tours last for 30 minutes and run from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.
Please refer to the flyer for additional information.
The link below provides a personal dementia caregiver story to help caregivers see that that they’re not alone in their journey and see the benefits of attending the Summit.
Thanksgiving
1850 – 1919
We walk on starry fields of white
And do not see the daisies;
For blessings common in our sight
We rarely offer praises.
We sigh for some supreme delight
To crown our lives with splendor,
And quite ignore our daily store
Of pleasures sweet and tender.
Our cares are bold and push their way
Upon our thought and feeling.
They hand about us all the day,
Our time from pleasure stealing.
So unobtrusive many a joy
We pass by and forget it,
But worry strives to own our lives,
And conquers if we let it.
There’s not a day in all the year
But holds some hidden pleasure,
And looking back, joys oft appear
To brim the past’s wide measure.
But blessings are like friends, I hold,
Who love and labor near us.
We ought to raise our notes of praise
While living hearts can hear us.
Full many a blessing wears the guise
Of worry or of trouble;
Far-seeing is the soul, and wise,
Who knows the mask is double.
But he who has the faith and strength
To thank his God for sorrow
Has found a joy without alloy
To gladden every morrow.
We ought to make the moments notes
Of happy, glad Thanksgiving;
The hours and days a silent phrase
Of music we are living.
And so the theme should swell and grow
As weeks and months pass o’er us,
And rise sublime at this good time,
A grand Thanksgiving chorus.
......and express our heartfelt thanks to our volunteers, participants and supporters that make all our Encore programs a success in serving the senior community of Fountain Hills.

Thanksgiving Reflections....
"Whether seated at a table of ten,
Or a TV tray with room for one,
A spread with food from A to Z,
Or a frozen dinner on a plate.
Whether flanked by friends and family, good cheer galore,
Or only cherished mem'ries from days of yore;
There are blessings, gifts and miracles too,
When graced to see our lives anew."
I hope you enjoy the poem "Thanksgiving" written by Ella Wheeler Wilcox. Born on November 5, 1850, in Johnstown Center, Wisconsin, Wilcox was a novelist, playwright, and poet. She was a popular writer characterized mainly by her upbeat and optimistic poetry, though she was also an activist. Her poetry collections include Poems of Passion (W. B. Conkey Company, 1883); Poems of Pleasure (Belford, Clarke, and Company, 1888); and Poems of Peace (Gay & Bird, 1906). Several of her poems served as the bases of four silent films: The Price He Paid (1914), The Beautiful Lie (1917), The Belle of the Season (1919), and The Man Worth While (1921). Her autobiography, The Worlds and I, was published in 1918.

On October 3rd, Tiffany Lam from the Maricopa County's Attorney Office attended the Brunch and Be Aware Event hosted by Fountain View Village and presented the Scams and Fraud program. The presentation was very well received and other groups are exploring opportunities to have Ms. Lam return to Fountain Hills in the future to share more information pertinent to our senior community.
